Pupil Premium

pupil premium letter july 24.pdf

What is Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium is a government scheme that was introduced in 2011 to improve the education of disadvantaged children based on research showing that children from low income families perform less well at school than their peers.

In contrast to the rest of their classmates, many children who are eligible for pupil premium have to face extra challenges daily. These challenges can include attendance issues, lack of confidence and difficulty communicating with others.

The scheme aims to grant schools extra funding so that they’re able to provide additional support for children who are faced with these types of challenges. Its objective is to help schools unlock the learning potential of their pupils and provide them with a better education. It also aspires to narrow the gap in educational development between children of underprivileged backgrounds and their peers.

Who qualifies for the pupil premium?

Children can be eligible for the pupil premium for a variety of reasons. These include their family circumstances, such as their income or occupations, and whether or not they’re in care. If a child is eligible, a school will receive the necessary amount of funding for each child per school year.

The funding is used in school in a variety of ways. Your child will receive a free school meal, it is used to support additional learning, to provide more interventions to accelerate your child’s academic progress as well as interventions to develop self-esteem, self-confidence and social emotional skills. It can be used to support music tuition, help with paying for trips and residential visits and to support eligible children to access extra-curricular clubs such as Judo. If your child is in Reception to Year 2 they will be receiving Universal Infant Frees School Meals however they are still entitled to this additional funding which can help with some of the above.

Your child may be eligible for pupil premium/free school meals if you receive any of the following:

  • Income Support.
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance.
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit.
  • Child Tax Credit - Provided you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit. Also your annual gross income of no more than £16,190.
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit.
  • Universal Credit - if your household income is less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get).

Please note: If you are in receipt of working tax credits you may not be eligible for free school meals or clothing grants.

If you believe your child may qualify for this support in school, where possible all parents and guardians should apply online. Further information and the link to apply can be found at:-

Please note that, should your circumstances change and you no longer qualify for receipt of any of the above benefits, pupil premium funding will still continue to be paid to support your child for a further 6 years.
